NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -Voters can soon decide on a constitutional amendment that prevents the state from spending transportation funding on the State Police.

Between 1991 and 2015 lawmakers diverted nearly $700 million from the transportation trust fund to State Police for traffic control.

The proposed amendment would ban the practice even though the state stopped doing it after Governor John Bel Edwards took office.

The state currently has $14 billion backlog for road and bridge projects.
