BATON ROUGE (WVUE) - A 46-year-old inmate died after being involved in a fight at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola Saturday (Oct. 20), according to the Louisiana Department of Corrections.
The fight broke out around 10 a.m. between Derrick Williams and another inmate. After the fight, Williams collapsed and became unresponsive, the DOC said. He was brought to the prison treatment center and was pronounced dead a short while after.
Williams was sentenced to life in prison in June 1997 after being found guilty of crimes including aggravated rape, burglary, armed robbery, second-degree battery, simple robbery and attempted simple escape. His cause of death was undetermined as of Saturday evening, the DOC said.
The DOC did name the other inmate involved in the fight and his identity is being withheld while an investigation is underway.
