NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - One billion dollars was on the line Friday night in the Mega Millions drawing, and people went out in droves to buy their tickets
The Discount Zone store on Metairie Road sold 1,127 Mega Millions tickets on Friday alone.
Even though the chances of winning the jackpot were 1 in 302.6 million, people were still willing to play their lucky numbers and dream about what they would do with the money - from taking care of family and loved ones, to buying the Saints, to buying a few homes across the country and retiring.
The Discount Zone manager said when a lottery jackpot gets this big, it brings out all kinds of players, including those who regularly play and those who are playing for the first time. He said it creates a fun environment where everyone’s excited about the possibility of winning all that money.
“I feel like I’ve been playing all day as my customers have sworn as soon as they win big money they’re going to hire me as their personal chef, among other things. I had one told me he wanted me to walk behind him with the boombox playing his personal music. I said that’s a really good idea!” said Shawn Mayer.
