Police: Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run near Laplace

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Investigators are searching for the driver who left 55-year-old Danny Simoneaux to die after crashing into him on LA-628 in Laplace overnight Saturday (Oct. 20), according to Louisiana State Police.

The fatal hit-and-run was reported shortly after 7 a.m. near Clement Drive, police said in a news release. The victim, later identified as Simoneaux, was pronounced dead on the scene. Police believe Simoneaux was walking in or near the westbound lane of the highway sometime during the night and was struck by a vehicle, which troopers are currently working to identify.

The type of car was unknown Saturday evening, but investigators believe it has damage to its right side on the bumper, hood and headlight. Anyone with information regarding the driver or vehicle is asked to contact Louisiana State Police at 504-471-2275.

A second fatal crash killed a 56-year-old New Orleans man driving a dump truck Saturday morning in Hahnville, according to State Police.

Around 11 a.m., Harold Belonga was driving south on LA-3127 near South Fashion Boulevard, where traffic was stopped while a law enforcement officer removed debris from the roadway. Belonga failed to notice the stopped traffic and hit the breaks too late for a vehicle the size and weight of the truck, police said in a news release. When he tried to swerve to the left, Belonga lost control of the truck, drove onto the grassy median, flipped over the guardrail and caught fire.

Belonga was pronounced dead on the scene.

A Toyota Highlander was hit by a tire that detached from the truck during the crash, but no one in that vehicle was hurt, police said.

Both crashes are under investigation and no further information was available Saturday night.
