Schools announce delays, some closures ahead of severe weather threat

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Several school systems have announced that schools will delay their start times or close ahead of Thursday’s severe weather threat.

All Catholic schools in Orleans Parish and Jefferson Parish will have a delayed start Nov. 1. The school day will begin at 10 a.m. Parents should check school websites and social media accounts for updates about school-specific activities. This is in addition to the late intake at St. John the Baptist Parish Catholic Schools and a 10 a.m. start at Annunciation Catholic School in Bogalusa. St. Tammany Parish is monitoring the weather threat and will make a decision later tonight. Parents should check school websites and social media accounts for updates.

The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) is recommending that all public schools in Orleans Parish have a start time no earlier than 11 a.m. for Nov. 1. Parents of children attending charter schools are strongly encouraged to check with their schools for exact start times because they may differ. OPSB direct-run schools (McDonogh 35 High School and Cypress Academy) will delay the start of school to 11 a.m. Rooted School in the Touro Synagogue on St. Charles Avenue will be closed.

All public schools and Catholic schools in St. John the Baptist Parish will delay their start times by three hours.

St. Charles Parish Public Schools will delay the start times of schools by three hours. There will be no before-school care, and school buses will begin to pick up students 40 minutes before the start of classes. Maintenance personnel are expected to arrive at work at 8:30 a.m., and all other personnel are expected to arrive at 9:30 a.m. Destrehan High School and Hahnville High School will start school at 10:10 a.m. Albert Cammon, Harry Hurst, J.B. Martin, R.K. Smith, Ethel Schoeffner and Luling Schools will begin at 10:55 a.m. Allemands, Lakewood, Mimosa Park, New Sarpy, Norco, St. Rose and R.J. Vial schools will begin at 11:45 a.m. Officials added that schools will still dismiss at regular times, and all after-school activities and after-school care will take place as usual.

St. Charles Catholic Schools will delay school intake by three hours. St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Destrehan will remain closed as previously scheduled.

Bogalusa City Schools will begin at 10 a.m. with school buses beginning to pick up students at 9 a.m. All personnel are expected to arrive at school by 9 a.m. Annunciation Catholic School will also delay the start of school until 10 a.m.

Tangipahoa Parish Schools will delay the start of school by two hours. School will dismiss at the regular time.

Northshore Charter School will delay the start of school until 10 a.m. with school buses beginning to pick up students at 9 a.m. Parents can begin dropping of students at 9:45 a.m. Breakfast will not be provided for students.

Jefferson Parish Public Schools will remain closed for a scheduled student holiday, and Parent Teacher Conference times will continue as scheduled. Elementary school employees will report to school at 9:30 a.m. with parent-teacher conferences scheduled from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Middle School and High School employees will report for 11 a.m. with parent-teacher conferences scheduled from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Lafourche Parish Public Schools will delay its take-in times two hours and 15 minutes later than normal. A 7:15 a.m. take-in time will now be 9:30 a.m., a 7:45 take-in time will now be 10 a.m., and an 8:30 take-in time will be 10:45 a.m. All office personnel will report to work with a two-hour delay. 7:30 a.m. take-in will now be 9:30 a.m. Dismissal time will remain at the normal time. ​

Central Catholic School in Morgan City will be closed Nov. 1. All Catholic schools in Lafourche Parish will delay their start time by two hours and 15 minutes. Dismissal will be at the regular time. Lafourche includes St. Genevieve Catholic Elementary, St. Joseph Catholic Elementary, E. D. White Catholic High, St. Mary’s Nativity School, Holy Savior School, and Holy Rosary School

InspireNOLA campuses will have a delayed start Nov. 1. Bus transportation will not be provided to school but will be provided back home.

Athlos Academy of Jefferson Parish will have a delayed start time of 10:30 a.m. Nov. 1. Buses will pick up students three hours later than their typical pick-up time.

New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy will be closed on Nov. 1.

Algiers Charter Schools will open at 10:30 a.m. Bus transportation to school will not be provided, but transportation home will. Dismissal remains the same.

Edward Hynes Charter Elementary School Open House Tours for parents and prospective students scheduled on Nov. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. are cancelled.

Audubon, Uptown and Gentilly campuses: Staff report at 10:30 a.m.; before care and breakfast is cancelled.

Homer Plessy: Bus pickup delayed 3.5 hours; Staff report at 10:30 a.m.

Hynes Charter: Bus pickup: 10 a.m.; staff report time is 10:15 a.m.; pre-K class is cancelled. All before-school care and breakfast is cancelled for all grades; All open house school tours are cancelled and will be rescheduled; 5th grade StarBase program for 5G and 5D is cancelled. Dismissal and after-care will take place as normal.

Ben Franklin High: School opens at 10 a.m. for student drop-off, cafeteria opens for service at 10:30 a.m. Classes start at 11 a.m. Normal after-school will take place.

Einstein Charter Schools: Staff should report at 10 a.m.

International High School of Louisiana: Bus pick-up is three hours later than normal time; faculty and staff arrive at 10:30 a.m.

International School of Louisiana, Dixon and Westbank campuses: Staff reports at 10 a.m., students at 11 a.m. Uptown campus: Staff reports at 10:30 a.m., students at 11:30 a.m.

Morris Jeff Charter: Faculty report at 10 a.m., high school students report at 11 a.m., elementary and middle school students report at 11:15 a.m.

Warren Easton Charter: Staff report at 11:30 a.m., students should report at noon, dismissal will be at 3:30 p.m.

Kenner Discovery: Staff reports at 10 a.m., students report at 10:15 a.m.

KIPP schools in New Orleans will open at 11 a.m. Nov. 1. Buses will run approximately 3.5 hours later than normal and will dismiss at the normal time.

Delayed starts Nov. 1 at George Washington Carver High School (11 a.m.), Livingston Collegiate Academy (12:20 p.m.), Rosenwald Collegiate Academy (11 a.m.). Opportunities Academy cancelled. Abramson Sci Academy cancelled.

Atonement Lutheran School in Metairie will delay opening until 10 a.m. Nov. 1.

Bishop McManus Academy will have a delayed start at 10 a.m. on Nov. 1.

Belle Chasse Academy will delay start of school to 11 a.m.; teachers report at 10:45 a.m. Buses begin pickup at 10 a.m.
