NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The elevated section of an I-10 overpass was damaged as the result of a fiery crash involving an 18-wheeler on I-10 near the Veterans Blvd. exit on Tuesday.
Investigators say a Grand Marquis sideswiped it, and sent the rear trailer over the guardrail. No one was seriously hurt, but I-10 was closed in both directions for hours.
The damage to the structure has required that the DOTD close one of the three lanes along I-10 eastbound. Engineers are currently working on the restoration of the damaged section of the structure in order to be able to restore traffic on all three lanes.
No concrete timetable has yet been established by the DOTD to complete the restoration work.
In conjunction with the one lane closure of I-10 eastbound, the DOTD has also found it necessary to close the Power Blvd. southbound on-ramp to I-10 eastbound to facilitate better traffic movement along the two open lanes of I-10 eastbound.
To alert motorist of this ramp closure, the Parish is installing three electronic signs in the general vicinity of West Esplanade Avenue/Power Blvd. providing a message indicating that the Power Blvd. on-ramp has been temporarily closed.
The parish will continue to release updates as needed.
