NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus rolled in the Marigny, Saturday. It’s the first time the group paraded this early and members couldn’t have been more excited.
“The Geek has inherited the Earth!” said Brian Held Jr.Two-thousand self-proclaimed geeks of all fandoms took to the streets of the Crescent City Saturday night, from Sharknado to Star Wars and everything in between. This year’s theme was “Space Farce”.
“You might have heard of a thing that's happening in the national media called Space Force. This is our little play on it,” said Krewe of Chewbacchus’ Charlotte Piotrowski.
The krewe's ninth annual parade was marked with an exciting first.
“We're kicking off Mardi Gras this year,” exclaimed Pat Branan.
Instead of Krewe du Vieux, Chewbacchus will take center stage.
The krewe usually rolls later in the season, about 10 days before Mardi Gras Day. This year, it was asked to move up their parade due to its growing popularity and so NOPD could provide security.
“I think now, because of this city, because of the spirit of New Orleans, of revelry, of Carnival. People get it. They understand. It could be a random Tuesday and you'll see someone dressed like Darth Vader so, I think the city gets Chewbacchus,” Held Jr. said.
Chewbacchus is not only unique for it's 100 wonky sub-krewes, but because it's an all green parade, with no plastic and no petroleum, complete with a hundred contraptions that don't require internal combustion. Plus, all throws are handmade.
“These are all handmade pewter from a stone mold that I make myself,” said Pat Branan.
Whether you're into the comic-con craze or you've never seen a sci-fi flick you actually enjoyed, the creativity you'll see at the Krewe of Chewbacchus is second to none.
“Geek truly is chic now. We are the mainstream,” said Held Jr.
Krewe du Vieux will roll through the French Quarter February 16.
