NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office held a news conference Thursday to address a fatal shooting of a 9-year-old Marrero boy.
According to Sheriff Joseph Lopinto, the shooting happened Wednesday night at 10:12 p.m. in the 2000 block of Rue Racine
Marquis Thomas was identified as the victim.
Lopinto said Kamone Thomas, 18, was arrested for negligent homicide, obstruction of justice, and possession of marijuana.
According to JPSO, deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 2000 block of Rue Racine in reference to the victim possibly shooting himself. The victim was transported to a local hospital via a private vehicle, and was later pronounced dead.
Thomas, who is a relative of the boy, said that the 9-year-old was playing with the firearm in a bedroom.
Lopinto said Thomas admitted that the boy was shot as Thomas “playfully” attempted to disarm the victim.
Thomas disposed of the firearm following the incident, according to the report.
