Kentwood woman accused of setting fire to family’s property twice in one day

AMITE, LA (WVUE) - State Fire Marshal deputies have arrested a Kentwood woman for allegedly setting fire to her family’s property twice in one day.

Laura Smith, 37, was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on Thursday (Feb. 14). She faces two counts of aggravated arson and one count of simple arson.

That morning, Tangipahoa Fire District #1 responded to multi-structure fire in the 18000 block of East Bell Road in Amite. Firefighters discovered a house on fire, along with a fire in one room of an occupied manufactured home 150 feet from the house. A travel trailer near the home also had fire and heat damage.

Investigators determined that the fire had been deliberately set. While gathering witness statements off-site, a new fire call came in to the same address reporting the manufactured home was once again on fire.

After assessing the new scene and gathering additional information, Smith was identified as the suspect and was placed under arrest.

There was no word on a motive.
