NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash in Jefferson Parish that left two people dead and two others seriously injured.

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection on Airline Drive and North Atlanta Street.

According to investigators, 24-year-old German Mejia was driving a 2008 Honda Civic northbound on Airline Highway when for unknown reasons the vehicle veered onto the right shoulder of the road struck the back of a 2012 International 18-wheeler parked on the shoulder.

Mejia and a passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Michael Medrano, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers inside the vehicle who have been identified as 22-year-old Leandro Gonzales and a 15-year-old juvenile were taken to University Medical Center where they are being treated for critical injuries.

State Police believe Mejia was impaired at the time of the crash and say he was also unlicensed. Toxicology tests are pending.

The driver responsible for the 18-wheeler parked on the shoulder was cited for illegal parking.

State Police say the crash remains under investigation.
