BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's state school board has joined a lawsuit that accuses Gov. Bobby Jindal of illegally meddling in education policy through his efforts to block Common Core education standards. At issue is Jindal's suspension of contracts the education department intended to use to buy testing material aligned with Common Core.
HOUMA, La. (AP) - A 54-year-old Dulac (DOO-lak) woman says her pit bull attacked her for 45 minutes, and had previously attacked other family members, including children. Kathleen Shaffer tells The Courier that her doctor told her he could not even count the bites from the Sunday attack. Officials say the dog will be euthanized after a 10-day wait to check for rabies.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The sponsor of a Louisiana law that requires doctors that perform abortions to have hospital admitting privileges doesn't believe the provision is in jeopardy after a federal appeals court struck down a similar Mississippi law. Louisiana's law, sponsored by Monroe Rep. Katrina Jackson, takes effect Sept. 1.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans police said the bullet-riddled body of an unidentified woman has been found under a remote overpass. A passer-by spotted the body yesterdayin a muddy, weed-covered area underneath the France Road overpass.
