New Orleans plants 10,000 tree since Katrina

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans is getting greener - and leafier. .

The devastation to the canopy of trees in the city by Hurricane Katrina is being repaired by the non-profit Parkway Partners, which has been replanting trees to replace those lost or damaged by the 2005 storm.

On Thursday, the 10,000th tree was planted.

Work began immediately after the storm and was in collaboration with the city's Department of Parks and Parkways and funding from organizations such as the Edward Wisner Fund, Brown Foundation and American Forests Foundation.

Entergy announced at the event that it will contribute an additional $25,000 to Parkway Partners to encourage future plantings through the ReLeaf New Orleans initiative. Entergy has donated a total of $65,000 since Katrina.
