Bring on the Ultrabooks!

Experts predict that the next big thing in the PC universe will be the ultrabook. Actually, it's the next small thing, because ultrabooks are super-thin, super-light, high-performance notebooks, inspired by the latest MacBook Air models from Apple.

"Ultrabook" is a term coined by Intel, who provides the underpinnings for the super-fast operating system boot-up times, impressive battery life, and extreme portability that characterize ultrabooks.

The ASUS Zenbook is not the first ultrabook to hit dealers' shelves. The line was preceeded by models from Acer and Toshiba. The Zenbook, however, poses the strongest challenge to the MacBook Air. Simply put, every aspect of its design is spot on.

Although svelte and sleek, the Zenbook series packs a wallop, thanks to power-efficient versions of Intel's Core i5 and Core i7 processors and SATA solid-state storage (SSD) with super-fast transfer speeds. As icing on the cake, all models also feature USB 3.0.

The unit's Super Hybrid Engine II provides instant-on, with two-second resume from sleep and up to two weeks of standby time. Combined with the aforementioned SATA solid-state storage, the Zenbook provides an amazingly smooth and fast computing experience.

The all-aluminum, precision-crafted chassis measures only 3mm at the front and 9mm at the rear. The tight clearances require an ingenious cooling system whose rear-facing exhaust vent is nicely concealed by the screen's recessed hinge assembly.

A Chiclet style keyboard (not backlit) paired with a glass-surface touch-pad round out the Zenbook's good looks. The short-throw keys are nicely-arranged, and the touch-pad can be configured for as much finger-swiping, pinch-zooming, and hand-gesturing as your heart desires.

The unit also comes with SonicMaster technology, co-developed with Bang & Olufsen ICEpower, which ASUS says delivers four times the sound of other ultrabooks, yet keeps the weight of all Zenbook models under 3 lbs.

Zenbooks are available with either an 11-inch (ASUS Model UX21E) or a 13-inch (ASUS Model UX31E) screen. Prices start at $999. For more information, visit
