Chalmette - Community and business leaders joined Wal-Mart officials in a ribbon
cutting ceremony for the re-opening of the Wal-Mart in Chalmette.
After years of anticiapation, the people of St. Bernard Parish finally
have a Wal-Mart close to home.
Since Hurricane Katrina, the closest Supercenter was miles away, forcing
some to travel as far as Harahan, Metairie or Slidell.
Now, more than four years later, Saint Bernard parish residents are
celebrating the return of the largest private employer in the world.
"This is enormous, you know, not only from a financial stand point in
terms of the sales tax revenues that it will generate, but just in terms
of the moral building that goes on, that we now have another major step
towards normalcy and convenience," said Craig Taffaro, St. Bernard
Parish President.
"And we are really happy that they opened back up again," said customer Emily Boyd.
"We've needed it for a long time!" said customer Susan Serpas.
The new Chalmette Wal-Mart off Judge Perez Dr. is officially open for
business.
