New Orleans – The University of New Orleans is about to launch a "Saturday Music School" for kids in the New Orleans area. The New Orleans Jazz Institute is working along with UNO and its charter school network to offer intensive music instruction for 40 young people between the ages of 8 and 14.
The free classes will begin in the fall for students chosen at auditions in August. Saturday Music School will include both private and group classes.
“There has been a void of good programs versus the amount of interest that kids have in wanting to learn how to play this music. So, in a city that has created this wonderful American treasure, it is a great place to be now to answer that mandate,” said local jazz musician Irvin Mayfield.
The Saturday school will not just be about jazz. They will be offering instruction in strings, music theory and more. To learn more, call 504-280-3303 or email
