Chalmette - Add St. Bernard Fire Chief Tommy Stone to the list of people who believe they have been plagued with problems associated with tainted Chinese drywall.
Stone has begun picking up detectable levels of hydrogen sulfide in his bathroom, after the shower is used. He is also seeing corrosion on nickel plated fixtures, and brass ceiling fans. He also says certain electronic items like clocks an scales, are breaking at unprecedented rates.
Stone has just rebuilt his Chalmette home, and is now looking at the possibility of taking out loans to replace tainted drywall in his home.
He says he will definitely change it out in the bathrooms, since heat and moisture seem to activate the release of sulfides. Stone says what bothers him the most, is that no one knows what the longterm impacts might be.
In a related matter, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, is now calling for the head of the consumer product safety commission to be replaced.
The group, 'America's Watchdog’ believes thousands of homes have been infected by tainted drywall. While they advise any victims to seek counsel, they warn them to be careful about signing up with national law firms, who could wind up paying them just pennies on the dollar.
Spokesman Thomas Martin says tainted drywall could turn into a 'national disaster.'
