New Orleans - There is new information on two fronts in our FOX 8 investigation into Chinese drywall complaints. Sen. Mary Landrieu wants her colleagues to begin hearings on the matter. Complaints are also coming in from Florida homeowners, prompting the environmental protection agency to take action.
Landrieu fired off this letter this week asking the Senate Commerce Committee to schedule a hearing as soon as possible on the health and safety impacts of Chinese made drywall.
“There are general laws that protect consumers and with a hearing like this we can see if there are any additional steps to take and we can act accordingly,” Landrieu said.
In the letter, Landrieu says she is concerned the consumer product safety commission has been moving too slowly when it should have been the first line of defense in preventing this product from entering the U.S. market.
Landrieu is also asking for a recall of Chinese made drywall, and hopes a senate hearing will help convince other lawmakers from states not affected that time is of the essence.
One more sign of movement on a federal level - the Environmental Protection Agency confirms it will soon begin testing two homes in Florida - one of them affected by tainted drywall, the other, free of problems.
