So many patients have registered to receive free health care at Saturday’s large free clinic in New Orleans that the National Association of Free Clinics (NAFC) is putting out an urgent call for more physicians and other health care providers to volunteer their services.

As of this morning, more than 1,300 patients had registered for the C.A.R.E. (Communities Are Responding Everyday) Clinic to be held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Based on experience with a similar one-day free clinic in Houston in September, organizers expect more than 2,000 patients to take advantage of the New Orleans clinic.

“We’re amazed at the support we have already received, but we need additional medical volunteers to serve the increased need at this event,” NAFC Executive Director Nicole Lamoureux said.

The types of volunteers most needed are physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants.

People interested in volunteering may register online at www.regonline.com/neworleanscare. Information for volunteers and patients also is available at http://freeclinics.us.
