New Orleans - Nearly 4.5 million people have lost their jobs since the recession began. These are some tips to surviving the pink slip.

First, and most important - know your rights. You are due wages you've earned, including overtime or commission. Severance, sick time and vacation are all at the employer's discretion.

Call the Department of Labor at 866-487-2365 or 4-USA-DOL, if you think your rights have been violated. Get all the public assistance you can.

Apply for jobless benefits. They've been expanded to up to 33 weeks of benefits, and as much as 59 weeks for people in states with high joblessness rates. Check out workforcesecurity.doleta.gov for the details.

Finally, claim your health benefits. Get on a family member's plan and you'll have 60 days to apply for Cobra benefits - Those are just an extension of your existing health insurance coverage, only you pick up the tab.
