New Orleans – Former Civil District Judge Nadine Ramsey officially announced she is running for the New Orleans mayor’s office, after weeks of having her name tossed around as a potential candidate.
Ramsey, a democrat, said she recently resigned from her position in the Orleans Parish Civil Court to focus on her run for mayor.
“Many have asked me why I would resign a great job to take on this difficult campaign and the tough job of Mayor, but my answer is simple: our city and our people need a determined fighter, motivated by idealism but tempered by realism, experienced in government but free of politics, to bring our city back,” Ramsey explained in a letter announcing her candidacy.
Ramsey is a New Orleans native who grew up in the Lower 9th Ward. She has served as Assistant City Attorney for New Orleans and Assistant Attorney General for Louisiana. She was a civil court judge in New Orleans for 13 years.
“I resigned my job as Judge to run, because I am determined to see this city and our people come back strong, prosper in a renewed and new economy, and fulfill the destiny of being the great city that New Orleans has always been,” Ramsey stated.
Ramsey joins state Sen. Edwin Murray, fair housing advocate James Perry and businessman Troy Henry as candidates who have officially announced their candidacies. State Rep. Austin Badon, who had announced his intentions to run for mayor nearly a year ago, dropped out of the race last week. Businessman John Georges is also considered a strong possibility to run.
Qualifying begins in December and the primary is set for February 6.
