New Orleans – Former City Councilman Jay Batt officially announced he will run for his old District A seat, currently held by Councilwoman Shelley Midura. The announcement ends months, if not years, of speculation that Batt would try to regain his post.
Midura, a political newcomer, beat Batt in 2006 after a bitter race to control a district that stretches from Lakeview to the Tulane University area. Midura said in July that she will not seek re-election
Batt said at a news conference Thursday that he couldn’t stay on the sidelines while his neighbors struggle to build a better New Orleans.
"Running for Council District A gives me an opportunity to participate in moving District A and the city in the right direction,” Batt stated. “In working with community groups in the months and years after Katrina, I understand what needs to happen to build a positive future, while protecting the history and culture of our community.
“ I want to seize the exciting opportunities that are there, jump start improvements to our infrastructure such as streets and blight, make our streets and neighborhoods safe from crime for our children and families, and ultimately improve our quality of life."
Batt was elected to the City Council in 2002.
No one else has officially announced their candidacy for the District A seat. Midura’s term ends in May.
