Video gamers could be placed next to drivers in real life car races thanks to a new system that has been devised.

Real Time Race is planning to hold a televised event to be hosted in 2010 so that people can play in the comfort of their homes and be placed alongside actual drivers.

Special technology would be used to map the circuit of the races so the virtual track will be matched up to the real one on television, the recording will then be manipulated and transferred during live coverage and streamed to the player's television via the Internet.

Head of the firm, Chris Leigh, says, "We can put you in your car, within real TV coverage of a real race, and in real time against the professionals."
