Check with your insurance company or employer to find out how much orthodontic treatment is covered by your health plan. Here are some important questions to ask: does my plan cover orthodontic treatment and, if so, at what percentage? Are there any limitations to coverage, such as age or maximum dollar amount? Typically a plan will pay fifty percent up to one-thousand to fifteen hundred dollars over the lifetime of the patient. Payments usually are made to the patient instead of the orthodontist. If you get insurance to pay for orthodontic treatment, make sure it pays the normal fee for the service and not for a cheaper alternative. Some insurance companies may ask for an amount as a co-payment and then ask the doctor to perform the treatment for the cost of the co-payment, costing the insurance company nothing. Contact an orthodontist or dentist in your area for more information on insurance coverage of orthodontic treatment.
