Improving the efficiency of any heating system is important in reducing high fuel costs. Here are some effective steps you can take: * Insulate the attic. Six inches of insulation can reduce fuel consumption up to twenty-five percent. * Weather-strip doors and windows to keep out cold air. * Add storm doors and windows. * Keep the damper closed on the fireplace when not in use. An open chimney wastes heat. * Put heavy draperies on doors and windows and keep them closed at night and when rooms are not occupied. * Lower the thermostat gradually - a degree at a time - to acclimate yourself to a lower temperature. You may find you are more comfortable with less heat. For more specific information, contact your local heating services professional.
