Houma- Houma Police say a car chase ended with an officer getting shot in the chest. It happened just before 3 a.m. Wednesday in the wooded area near the 48-hundred block of Bayouside Drive.

Officer Kelly Champagne and Keith Besson say Wendell Matthews took off in his car when he saw them patrolling the area. Eventually they chased him down on foot, but they say he resisted arrest and Officer Champagne tazed him. That's when officers say Matthews pulled out a gun, and fired at Champagne, hitting him in the chest and the left arm. Officer Champagne was wearing a bulletproof vest.

He fired back, hitting Matthews several times. Matthews then fled a short distance before officers caught him. Matthews was taken to Leonard Chabert Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition. Officer Champagne was treated and released.
