One dead, one injured in Houma crane accident

The crane operator was operating a 400 ton fixed land crane with a 200 ft. boom.  The operator was in the process of picking up a 30 ton certified weight from an 18-wheeler flat bed truck.  Then, as the weight was being placed on the ground next to the fabrication shop the boom of the crane crashed down into the building trapping one person inside of the building, the fire department and Acadian Ambulance Service removed him. Houma – One man was killed and another injured after a crane crashed down onto a fabrication shop in Houma.

Police say the crane operator was moving a 30 ton weight from an 18-wheeler flat bed truck when the boom of the fell down into a building, trapping Heath Perkins, 30, inside. Perkins was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The operator, Larry Naquin, 60, suffered serious injuries and remains in the hospital.

The accident happened around 1 p.m. at Elevated Boats Inc. in Houma.

No charges have been filed. The crash remains under investigation.
