New Orleans - Cheryl Conner spent the morning going through pictures. Her life with Mike Ainsworth ended on Wednesday and her children lost their father. He was shot and killed while trying to stop a carjacking in Algiers Point. Cheryl wasn't surprised to hear that Mike tried to intervene. "He was well known for doing something like that," says Cheryl.

Mike Ainsworth was also well known for being a devoted father and partner. He and Cheryl had been together for 12 years. "He was kind of like my soul mate," she says. "I thought we were going to get old together."

Thursday Cheryl and Mike's family spent the day comforting each other and planning funeral services. The neighborhood family is also grieving. Many stopped by the scene of the shooting today leaving flowers and signs. They consider Mike a hero.

"He was a good person and I just want them to remember that," says Cheryl. She also wants people to remember that he was a man who put himself at risk to help a neighbor in need.
