New Orleans--The city budget hearings will take a back seat to the plethora of events surrounding the dedication of the new World War II theater.
Hearings on the nearly half billion dollar general fund city budget for 2010 were to begin tomorrow morning, but City Council President Arnie Fielkow announced this afternoon that those discussions will be postponed until Monday because of the events at the WWII theater.
Friday's budget hearings were to involve the various pension funds the city has to allocate money to, as well as discussions on the overall dismal revenue picture.
The city is facing a nearly $70 million deficit and Mayor Ray Nagin has proposed an across the board 10-percent cut for all city agencies, as well as 12 furlough days for city employees, to help erase some of the red ink in the budget for next year.
By law, a budget for the new year must be approved by December 1st.
