GRAND TERRE ISLAND, La. (AP) - Dozens of oil-drenched pelicans
floated miserably around Grand Terre Island. A few hobbled onto the
beach.

Marianne Burke of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and
Fisheries says 35 oiled pelicans were reported Thursday in the area
around Grand Isle. She says a biologist reported that between 25
and 30 had been caught, and rescue boats were returning to the
islands.

It was only part of the bad news for animals as the Gulf of
Mexico oil spill continued.

The number of oiled sea turtles was up to 26, and the first
marine mammal showed up on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's
daily report of rescued animals. The report did not say what
species it was, and said only that it was in Florida waters and had
not yet been classified as either oiled or not oiled.
