Body Jet Lipo (FOX 8 News)
Body Jet Lipo (FOX 8 News)
New Orleans - Sometimes you can exercise til you're blue in the face... but there's still that little pocket of fat that just won't go away!

Now, there's a new procedure, literally washing away the flab..

It's called water assisted lipo, using a machine called body jet.

What makes this different from conventional lipo is the way the wand is used.

Dr. Jeffery Lui says, "In the past we used to go back and forth very fast, the faster we go the faster we can finish the case to remove more fat, but water liposuction is the opposite, you do it very slowly."

With water assisted lipo- doctors use a water-spray device that simultaneously injects water into the body while taking the fat out.

There's reportedly less swelling and bruising, compared to conventional liposuction which can leave a patient laid up for days.

This type of lipo is just hitting plastic surgery centers across the U.S. even though it's been used in Europe for some time, and while doctors agree it's less traumatic than other types of liposuction, they also say the final result may be the same."

"It's the newest thing to hit the market, and like all new things you'll see lots of advertisements, lots of promotions about it," says Dr. William Coleman of Metairie. "The water jet will work, but there's not one published article that says it's any better than standard liposuction."

Dr. Coleman was one of the first physicians in this country to perform traditional lipo when it was first introduced in 1983.

He believes water assisted lipo is more hype than anything.
Doctors say it's important to note- any form of lipo is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.

As with any surgery, there are risks of infection and in this case, damage to internal organs or tissues.
