New Orleans - They can look, feel and taste like cigarettes. They don't contain tar or tobacco, but can contain nicotine. They are called electronic cigarettes and they're sparking smokers' interest.

Tom Oliver smoked traditional cigarettes for 22 years, until he discovered electronic cigarettes.

"It is just similar enough to satisfy my craving." He explains how electronic cigarettes work.

Oliver points to his dissected e-cig saying, "This is the battery. It is a lithium re-chargeable battery. This is the atomizer that you screw together with the battery. And there is a wick that captures the fluid that is in here and wicks it down into the atomizer."

The atomizer turns the liquid -- with or without nicotine -- into vapor.

Dr. Charles Brown, a professor with LSU Health Sciences Center, is not sold on the e-cig.

"I don't see how anything that addicts you to nicotine is healthy," Brown said.

He also worries the hi tech gadget that offers fruity flavored vapor will addict a new generation to nicotine. And he wonders how Louisiana's Clean Air Act will deal with people smoking electronic cigarettes in places where traditional smokes are banned.

John Henry is not only an e-smoker, but he also sells them thru www.truesmoker.com. He says since the fluid that fuels the electronic cigarettes comes in high, medium, low and no nicotine smokers can use the product to quit smoking -- though it is not the products' purpose.

"This is not a smoking cessation device. If you happen to quit smoking because of it, God bless you," Henry said. He and other smokers claim they feel much healthier since quitting traditional cigarettes.

I smoked for 30+ years and quit smoking using this product. I enjoy this healthier alternative and I do feel better. The mist goes away instantly so there is no danger to other people like second hand smoke and no smell. The Propylene glycol which is the major component of the liquid is used in a lot of food and other products. There was a study done in 1942 which proved that it was safe, doesn't build up in the lungs, and may even prevent flu (watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOSlqFmGelM). As for the other trace elements the FDA found in 1 brand of liquid they are also found in smoking cessation products that the FDA has approved (like the nicotine gum). As far as getting people addicted to nicotine most the people I know who use it was already addicted before they switched. One more point although it is not required I have not seen 1 place that will sell them to anybody under 18. Most people under 18 cannot afford the price to get started with them anyway it is much cheaper for them to just buy a pack of cigarettes. I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion and concerns.

JD, look at the top right of this page. Nice video, although the Dr. commenting is a little less than correct on his comments and should do some research before commenting during an interview for television. Ethylene glycol is the main ingredient used in normal antifreeze, and IS toxic, and therefore contained in NO electronic cigarette products of any kind. Propylene glycol is the main ingredient in NON-toxic antifreeze, used in food service refrigeration; you can drink that stuff and suffer few if any ill effects.
