It's the ultimate irony.
As the Army Corps of Engineers speeds along with work to dam the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, a growing number of fishermen are seeking an adjustment in plans.
The rock dam is going up below Hopedale, but fishermen say it will ultimately cost them money and could cost lives.
That's because it will mean a longer run to fishing grounds for fishermen who have grown accustomed to the wide MRGO.
They also say so much boat traffic will be forced into narrow bayous, that accidents are inevitable.
They are now sounding off to senator david vitter who says he will revisit the issue with the corps.
For the Corps's part, officials say no one mentioned the possibility of a gap or an alternate route until after the plans were submitted to congress.
The dam is being built at a cost of nearly $75 million dollars, and could be finished by year's end.
