New Orleans - The 2,700 passenger Carnival Triumph arrived in New Orleans Wednesday after being delayed a day by Ida.
The ship will depart on its inaugural three-day cruise from the city today, then launch a year-round schedule to the Caribbean.
“We’re very pleased to launch year-round service from New Orleans –albeit a day later than scheduled – aboard the Carnival Triumph, whichwill be the Port’s largest year-round cruise ship,” said Mike Julius,Carnival's vice president. “Carnival has enjoyed an excellentrelationship with the Port of New Orleans for the past 15 years andduring this time our passenger counts have increased significantly."
Mobile's new cruise ship arrived a day late due to tropical storm Ida and prepared for a quick departure for the Mexican coast.
The ship that the Triumph will replace, the Fantasy, was also due to arrive Tuesday in Mobile, Ala. for its first cruise, but that was pushed back to Wednesday morning. Upon arrival Wednesday, it immediately prepared to leave on its first cruise to Cozumel and Costa Maya.
The Fantasy carries more than 2,000 passengers and was previously based in New Orleans. It replaced a smaller ship, the Holiday, in Mobile.
