NEW ORLEANS — The latest study from the watchdog group The Metropolitan Crime Commission says the New Orleans police are arresting more people and the district attorney's office is convicting more people of violent crimes.
The study, which was released on Monday, says felony convictions increased 46 percent in the first half of 2009 compared to the latter half of 2008. Convictions for violent felonies such as robbery, rape, and murder rose to their highest level since the beginning of 2007 when the commission began tracking state convictions. But the highest totals since long before that.
The 218 violent felony convictions in the first half of 2009 is higher than the 216 violent felony convictions in all of 2008.
