Pearl River - A Pearl River couple has filed what appears to be the first lawsuit in Louisiana alleging defective drywall made in China.
Jill Donaldson and her husband Jared Oertling say things like air conditioning coils, televisions, wall sockets and fixtures began to corrode in their new home.
After more than a year of wondering, the couple says all evidence began to point to sulfur compounds being emitted from their drywall.
They allege it was made by a German company that manufactures drywall in China. The couple may be forced to gut their home and rebuild.
Attorney Daniel Becnel Jr. has filed suit in Federal District court on behalf of the Donaldson and Oertling against Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin. There are class action suits in states like Florida, Texas, and Alabama against KPT.
Becnel says the drywall was used after Katrina in Louisiana to replenish shortages of drywall supplies, and around the country due to supply shortages because of a massive housing boom.
Becnel believes the Pearl River couple may be the first of many in Lousiana to join in the suit.
