Synthetic drug bust in Jefferson Parish

Harvey -- Jefferson Parish investigators say they arrested leaders in a synthetic drug making operation that blanketed the parish and beyond.

Sheriff Newell Normand says his office also hauled in a stash of evidence after months of undercover work.

"We've been able to seize what you see here today, thousands upon thousands in cash, weapons to my left, and all the goods behind us to be able to produce this stuff," said Normand.

Normand says George May and Tahn "Tommy" Tran are the primary individuals engaged in this enterprise. Tran owns the Smoke Solutions on Ames Boulevard and at least two others in the area where lawmen say synthetic drugs are sold.

"People walk in and I guess they get what they want," said Gayle Autin who lives near the Ames Boulevard location."They're all smiling when they come out. I didn't know what was being sold there."

Around the corner in a house on Ehret Road and several others in Marerro, Normand says the drugs were being manufactured. Searches of the homes investigators say revealed active labs.

"This is all about the money. The individuals selling this can give a damn about your kids give a damn for you, there is no sense of quality control and the health and welfare of anybody," Normand said.

He calls the conditions primitive in which the drugs are made. Leafy material, mixed with acetone and then chemical drugs. It is then sprayed with flavoring.

The suspects allegedly used high priced purchases to get rid of a enormous amounts of cash.

"You see a series of automobiles from Lamborghinis to a Porsche and a Lexus."

Greg's Grocery on 4th St. was also  listed as a location where the synthetic product was sold, as well as Mike's Discount on the Westbank Expressway in Marrero, and Botonix Accessories on Lapalco Boulevard in Harvey.

The packets sell for 15 to 20 dollars a each, investigators say they found enough chemicals and product to yield a more than a million dollars.
