Police say woman lied about sitter who abandoned baby

KENNER, La. (AP) - Kenner police say a woman whose baby was abandoned by a shoplifter lied about the identity of the suspect.

Lt. Wayne McInnis says the woman, Stephanie Johnson, will be booked with obstructing justice, making a false statement and filing a false police report.

Police say the woman identified an online acquaintance as the baby sitter who left the infant in a mall parking lot Saturday. Later Monday, she recanted. According to police, she now says it was her sister-in-law and she didn't want to get her in trouble.

Police say the woman who abandoned the baby also is accused of shoplifting and using a stun gun on a security guard.

McInnis says child welfare workers took the baby because the mother said she couldn't say who was babysitting.
