Bill would strengthen Louisiana ban on euthanasia

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A proposal to strengthen Louisiana's ban on euthanasia and assisted suicide will be debated by the full House.

The measure by Shreveport Rep. Alan Seabaugh, a Republican, would spell out that when a person is allowed to give authorization on behalf of a patient for a medical procedure, that person wouldn't be able to approve a procedure that would be considered assisted suicide or euthanasia.

That prohibition also would be extended to include surgical or medical treatment for the developmentally disabled or nursing home residents who may be unable to make their own medical decisions.

The bill was supported without objection Wednesday by the House health care committee.
