Coast Guard suspends search for missing pilot

The Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing pilot Thursday after the plane he was flying crashed 120 miles west of Tampa, Florida in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Cessna 421C piloted by Dr. Peter Hertzak took off from the Slidell Airport Thursday morning.

Coast Guard officials say he was headed to Sarasota, Florida when he became unresponsive and lost contact with air traffic control.

Two F-15 fighter jets from the National Guard tried to make contact with him before the plane crashed near Tampa and sank.
