LSU board fires system president Lombardi

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - LSU System President John Lombardi was fired Friday by the system's governing board.

The Board of Supervisors voted 12-4 to remove Lombardi.

Lombardi supporters say the move was orchestrated by Gov. Bobby Jindal, who appointed half the members of the board and has regularly been at odds with Lombardi over higher education policy.

Lombardi, known for his candor and combative manner, was hired in 2007. His tenure has been marked with budget struggles and management disputes.

Critics said Lombardi has not worked well with chancellors of LSU campuses or with lawmakers and Jindal.

Lombardi backers said the ouster was orchestrated overnight and surprised them. Lombardi wasn't at the board meeting when the vote to remove him was taken.
