New Orleans, La. - A New Orleans woman is behind bars after she abducted a 2 year-old girl from the yard she was playing in, police say.

According to police in Assumption Parish, on Saturday around 8:25pm, officers were called to the 200 block of Hwy 1003 in Belle Rose concerning a child being abducted.

Deputies spoke with the child's mother who said that a friend of the family, 47 year-old Paula Cooks of New Orleans, had attended a gathering at the residence and left with her two year old daughter without her permission.

Cooks allegedly took the child while she was playing in the yard with her nine year old sister.  Cooks told the nine year old that her sister was going to New Orleans with her and left the residence in a tan car.

Investigators responded to the incident and requested the assistance of a family member of Cooks with locating her.

Police say around 11:00pm, investigators learned that an acquaintance of Cooks had brought her and the child to the New Orleans Police Department Sixth District Station upon learning that the child was taken without the mother's permission.

Investigators responded to New Orleans and recovered the child, who was unharmed.  Cooks was transported back to Assumption Parish where she was charged with Simple Kidnapping.  She is currently being held on a $10,000 bond.
