NOPD makes arrest in shooting of a 13-year-old boy

New Orleans Police have arrested a 17 year-old for opening fire Thursday in Hollygrove, striking a 13 year-old boy in the back.

Officers arrested Georval Lewis at his home in the 9100 block of Forshey Street.

He's accused of opening fire near the corner of Eagle and Forshey Streets.  One of the bullets went through a 13-year-old boy's back and exited through his chest.  The wound caused one of his lungs to collapse.

Police say residents contacted police and told them of Lewis' possible involvement.  Detectives went to his home and arrested him.

During a search of the home, officers found a handgun and marijuana.

Lewis admitted to being in possession of the handgun, and firing the weapon at two unknown subjects in the incident.  He said he started shooting because someone else had opened fire first and was targeting his friends.

Lewis is booked with Aggravated Battery, Illegal Carrying of a Weapon and Illegal Use of a Weapon.
