Suspect in custody after pointing gun at officers

An NOPD officer fired multiple shots Tuesday morning in Algiers after cops say a man pointed a gun at the officer.

It started at Socrates in Thayer.

Police say it all began shortly before 10:30am when the officer spotted a young male on a bicycle.

An officer says he noticed something bulging from his waistband.

An NOPD spokesman says the officer tried to stop the man, but he jumped off the bike and began running. As the officer chased him, the suspect allegedly pointed a handgun at the cop and the cop fired multiple rounds.

The suspect wasn't hit by the bullets. Some residents question the cop's decision to open fire.

"This is a fairly decent neighborhood and the police harass everybody who comes through this neighborhood, you's just crazy," said resident Lionel Elzy.

The suspect has been taken into custody, but officers have not given his identity, or what he will be booked on.
