Popular, free anti-virus software stages a comeback

AVG was once the most popular free security suite for Windows, but it became bloated and slow. Although the company claims the software has 98 million active users worldwide, I don't see it installed nearly as much as I used to.

This will likely change, however, because AVG Anti-Virus FREE 2012 claims it is lighter, faster and smaller than any previous AVG product. The company has evidently done some soul-searching and come up with a lean, mean solution that gets the job done.

In addition to multi-layered protection, utilizing signature-based antivirus, heuristics and behavior-based threats detection, AVG Anti-Virus FREE 2012 has other key improvements, including:

  • 50% smaller download size and faster install time
  • 45% reduction in disk space on average
  • 20% less processes and memory usage
  • 10% faster load time

So far, both independent labs and critics have given the makeover high marks. AVG appears to be back in the game, offering free malware protection that some say surpasses commercial offerings. For more information, visit Free.avg.com.

Symantec Offers Norton Identity Safe for FREE

Norton Identity Safe is a password manager, which means it stores username/passwords securely. When sites ask for them, the software supplies them automatically. Until recently, Norton Identity Safe was only available as a component of Norton Internet Security 2012 and Norton 360, but it is now a standalone product. Even better, if you act before October 1, 2012, you can obtain a copy absolutely free.

Versions are available for computers running Windows or Mac OS X. Devices powered by Android and Apple's iOS can also use the tool. Norton Identity Safe has competition, most notably LastPass, 1Password, and RoboForm, but not all of these are free.

If you're not currently using an identity manager, you should be. It makes logging to websites faster, easier, and more secure. Norton Identity Safe is not as full-featured as some of the aforementioned competing products, but it works well and currently the price is right.

Furthermore, if like me, you're already using the bundled version of Norton Identity Safe, it's great that you can now use the tool at work, on your mobile devices, and elsewhere without spending an extra dime. For more information, visit Norton Identity Safe Offer.
