SUNO awards Janet Napolitano honorary degree

New Orleans, La. = U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, is being honored by Southern University at New Orleans, chosen as this year's commencement speaker.  She will also be awarded an honorary degree at its commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12 at the Keifer Lakefront Arena:

SUNO notes that Napolitano has been especially active in the areas of border security and immigration and helped to strengthen the nation's ability to respond to disaster by eliminating red tape and expediting the decision making process, which has been of particular help to Gulf Coast communities.

SUNO is also awarding an honorary degree to New Orleans native, Calvin G. Moret who graduated from Xavier Preparatory School in 1942.  He joined the U.S. military the following year in the midst of World War II, entering training as a military aviator at Tuskegee, Alabama and earning his wings and commission as a Flight Officer there in November of 1944.  His heroism was recently chronicled in the major motion picture, Red Tails.

"We are humbled to be able to honor pioneers such as Secretary Napolitano and Mr. Moret", said Chancellor Dr. Victor Ukpolo.  "It is that spirit of courage and leadership that we wish to instill in each student who passes through our halls.  We hope that not only our graduates but all of those in attendance at our commencement will be inspired by the lives that these two great Americans have lead and will take advantage of their opportunity to pave the way for those who follow."
