NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Orleans Parish School Board has appointed an interim superintendent.
Stan Smith served as the chief financial officer for the board since 2006. The board said Thursday that Smith will step in for Superintendent Darryl Kilbert, who officially retires June 30.
While the state's Recovery School District oversees charter groups that run most New Orleans Schools, the parish school board retains important financial responsibilities citywide. They include managing debt incurred before the state took over most schools after Hurricane Katrina, and raising money through bond sales.
The board also oversees more than 17 schools itself - running six directly with 11 more run by charter organizations.
