Chemical plant fire out, evacuation continues

Port Allen, La. - Emergency hazardous material crews have started the process of removing hundreds of cylinders filled with acetylene from the wreckage left behind from a chemical plant fire in West Baton Rouge Parish.

State Police Capt. Doug Cain says the fire caused by an explosion at the Air Liquide Speciality Chemical plant is out, with only two or three small "hot spots" still burning Tuesday morning.

Monday's blaze caused minor burn injuries to one plant employee and a mandatory evacuation for residents and businesses in a one mile radius of the plant.

Cain said its unknown how long it will be before residents can go back home or the roads near the plant will reopen.

The plant is located on U.S. Highway 190 between Port Allen and Erwinville.
