CNN- Ramen noodles are a staple long associated with college students. The instant meals are inexpensive, preserved for a long shelf life and only take minutes to cook.

Now, a Boston-area doctor has given the world a look inside the stomach to see how they digest.

"People have this interest in what's going on in their bodies but we can't see it," Dr. Braden Kuo of Massachusetts General Hospital explained to WCVB.

Volunteers swallowed pill-sized cameras and ate instant ramen one day, then fresh, homemade ramen on a different day.

It turns out instant ramen noodles don't digest as easily as their freshly-prepared counterparts.

"The most striking thing about our experiment, when you looked at a time interval," recalled Dr. Kuo, "say in one or two hours, we noticed processed ramen noodles were less broken down that homemade Ramen noodles."

The study was small and could not conclude if processed ramen is harmful. Dr. Kuo plans more research on processed foods and their effects on the gastro-intestinal tract.
