2 percent hike in students reaching 'basic' level

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - State education officials say the percentage of Louisiana public school students reaching "basic" achievement levels on standardized tests grew from 66 percent to 68 percent this year.

Superintendent of Education John White said at a Wednesday news conference that the 2 percent increase means roughly 10,000 more students are performing at grade-level this year than last year.

Statewide, improvement was noted at almost every grade level and every subject. The exception was sixth grade, where there were declines in most subjects.

The news conference was held at Greenlawn Terrace Elementary School in Jefferson Parish. White said 81 percent of the students at Greenlawn are performing at grade level, noting that more than 80 percent are from low-income families.
