Work crews clean up Pearl Harbor Memorial in St. Bernard Parish- WVUE
Chalmette, La. - There's been an overnight transformation at the Pearl Harbor Memorial in St. Bernard Parish.
Crews arrived this morning to cut the grass and clean the monument in response to a story on FOX 8 News.
FOX 8 revealed the neglect in a Memorial Day story which showed uncut grass, bird droppings on the monument and missing letters.
"We saw the story and what we did was bring in... early this morning, I've already had people out there." said St. Bernard Parish President David Peralta.
Peralta says he hopes to broker a way to keep it maintained in the future," We work very closely with the Sheriff's Office. I'm sure we can get with them, we'll talk with the Coast Guard again, some of the other veterans groups that we have here. We'll work something out."
The Pearl Harbor Memorial was dedicated in 1992. It is the work of local veteran Joseph Moitey who passed away nearly a decade ago.
